The French label Chanel, set up by its namesake, Coco Chanel is one of the most iconic brands in international fashion history. Founded in 1909, the House of Chanel started as a Parisian millinery shop, which later expanded into clothing, accessories, cosmetics, perfumes and jewellery. Some of the brand’s most famous pieces include the little black dress, ladies woollen suit and the quilted 2.55 handbag, which was first designed by Coco Chanel (1883 – 1971) in 1929, being further developed by Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld exaggerated its distinctive features by enlarging the interlocking double ‘C’s of the logo and repositioning them on the front of the bag. In doing so he created the most coveted status symbol of the decade, therefore the most easily identified and counterfeited. Lagerfeld continued with the house traditions of the two-piece suit and the petite noir (little black dress), combining the immediatecy of ready-to-wear with the luxuriousness of couture.
